Extract AVSA Review ZOUND ZA5 December 07

"Sonic delight Zound Acoustics ZA5

And once it is all set up and running, the ZA5 will surprise you with a sound that's bold and lively, with a generous tonal range, rock-solid imaging and attentive treatment of detail. The bass is punchy and pacy, with more substance and thrust than you would imagine possible from such small drive units. The mids are sleek and lean, rather than rich and plummy, while the treble is lucid and accessible without resorting to brightness."

I first heard the ZA5 at a friends flat, being a student at varsity she was very tight with space so having such a compact speaker system as this was perfectly ideal. Curious to here the quality, I popped in an ipod via the zound's dock and scrolled to one of my favourite stacey kent song's "they can't take that away from me" Raising the volume I was amazed by the warmth and depth that flowed from the midrange. The overall timbre integration between the silk tweeters and mid woofers was spot on. The sound filled the apartment effortlessly without any harshness or that ear fatiguing shrill that is often heard with other equipment. Highs were silky smooth capturing every detail, in fact, sitting back and closing my eyes, the soothing vocals made as if stacey really appeared! Instruments were well placed in space attributing to the excellent build quality of the internal crossover. On tracks that contained a little more bass coupled with snaps of a snare drum these Zound speakers never waivered, they were fast and quick capturing the very soul of the track itself. Pushing the volume even higher was addicting, the ZA5's just simply sounded better and better. So good in fact that it forced me to scroll to old favourites, and even brought a few 'dead' songs back to life especially with the multitude of details I had never heard before.

In a nutshell, this truly is an impressive package, One that easily is worth far far more than its asking price. Its simply Audio nirvana what this little package brings.

The sonic results exceed expectations. PRICE R3000 pair Inclusive SUPPLIED BY Sanji Electronics 011-266-7500 WEBSITE www.zoundacoustics.com By now, nobody will dispute the revolution that the advent of the iPod has brought about in the way people listen to music when on the move. What used to be the domain of the original Sony Walkman -- a portable, cassette-based music player for those of you who post-date that era -- is now owned largely by the ubiquitous iPod in its various forms. Portability, user-friendliness, performance and a healthy dash of style have all contributed to the iPod's success. But its appeal has also been boosted by accessories targeted at extending the iPod's sphere of operation beyond the personal stereo domain. The Zound Acoustics ZA5 is a good example. This iPod-based system consists of a pair of compact, active two-way loudspeakers, complete with matching stands. The one speaker also serves as a host for the universal dock, and has a blue-backlit LCD display. The ZA5’s application scope is further extended by the fact that its makers have included a digital FM tuner to the package, while there is also a 3,5 mm stereo socket input that allows an additional source, such as a non-Apple MP3 player, for instance, to be connected. A handy remote control handset offers full armchair control of the Zound system, including key iPod operations such as track skip, play and pause. The remote also performs source selection, as well tuner-based operations such as seek and scan. The speakers are a significant step up from the usual cheap 'n nasty variety often associated with systems of this kind. The enclosures are neatly crafted, with a black lacquer finish that looks smart and upmarket. In the front and you'll find a two-driver speaker array. The tweeter is a fairly conventional 20 mm silk dome tweeter with neodymium magnet and ferrofluid cooling. It is partnered by a 130 mm Kevlar-coned mid/bass driver with butyl rubber surround and large dust cap. The internal amplifier is a 2 x 50 watts class AB design specifically matched to the speakers for optimum efficiency and dynamic range. The iPod dock is located on the same speaker that also offers the backlit status display, and will accept any iPod with a dock connector. Exchangeable plastic inserts allow the dock slot to be adapted for the various iPod models. The rationale behind the Zound ZA5 is that many users would like to be able to enjoy the music playlists on their iPods without having to rely on headphones alone. Yes, there are lots of iPod dock-based products, but the ZA5 becomes a fully-fledged stereo system that can stand its own, and be run as an additional system in a bedroom, a study, a student apartment, or even a kitchen. And once it is all set up and running , the ZA5 will surprise you with a sound that's bold and lively, with a generous tonal range, rock-solid imaging and attentive treatment of detail. The bass is punchy and pacy, with more substance and thrust than you would imagine possible from such small drive units. The mids are sleek and lean, rather than rich and plummy, while the treble is lucid and accessible without resorting to brightness. At this juncture, it's important to highlight some aspects that will have a significant impact on the Zound ZA5’s performance potential. Firstly, the quality of files stored on the iPod play a vital role: the sonic shortcomings of a MP3 or proprietary AIFF file with a low sampling rate will quickly be revealed by this system. The music will end up sounding strident, with little foundation to assist it. Next, beware of indifferent loudspeaker placement. Yes, the speakers have the ability to deliver a larger-than-life soundstage, and to image with surprising focus and precision. But they need to placed symmetrically and slightly toed in towards the listening position to demonstrate this talent most effectively. So, a lossy file with a high sampling rate or (even better) a lossless file can sound astonishingly good when played through a decently installed ZA5 system. And all key features can be accessed remotely using the infrared handset. As an aside, the tuner does a good job of finding and holding on to stations, and can sound pretty good. And the auxiliary jack does allow those who have opted for other MP3 players the opportunity to link that player to the system. With an iPod installed, and another source connected, the Zound ZA5 becomes a compact, stylish and very effective entry-level system that also harnesses all the iPod's benefits in terms of ease of use and storage capacity. That it doesn't break the bank makes this Zound system a very sound choice. Or is that 'zound' choice?
